Virgil Lee Gilkey, the son of the late Joseph Virgil and Bessie Freeman Gilkey, was born in Danville, Arkansas on April 23, 1934, and passed away at the Cypress Point Nursing Center in Dexter, Missouri on September 16, 2007, at the age of 73 years, 4 months, and 24 days.
Mr. Gilkey had lived in Dexter, Missouri the past thirty years. He was a retired insurance agent and attended the Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading, was an avid Cardinals fan and also loved to fish.
On September 19, 1953, he was married to Ola Faye Gaines in Bernie, Missouri.
Surviving are his wife, Ola Faye Gilkey of Dexter, Missouri; two sons, Dennis Gilkey and wife Becky of Festus, Missouri, Micheal Gilkey of Lawrence, Kansas; three daughters, Linda Bresee, Sandra Griffin and husband Dale, all of Dexter, Missouri, Karen Gilkey of Lawrence, Kansas; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother, James Gilkey and wife Cecila; and one sister, Earlene Toole and husband Randol of Gideon, Missouri . Other relatives and friends also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene, Charles and Roy Gilkey, and two sisters, Sue Allen, Evelyn Gilkey and one great granddaughter, Rachel Bresee.
Friends may call on Wedneday September 19, 2007, from 10:00 AM until service time at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday September 19, 2007, at 11:00 AM at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter, Missouri with the Rev. Mike Watkins of Dexter, Missouri officiating.
Interment will follow in the Armstead Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter, Missouri with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter, Missouri in charge of arrangements.
