Velvadean "Dean" Hendrix, daughter of the late Richard Overton and Lula Jackson Overton Hodge was born December 25, 1926, in Zalma, Missouri. Dean passed away on February 23, 2013 at Westwood Hills Health Care Facility in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, at the age of 86.
She was raised in Puxico, Missouri and graduated from Puxico High School, worked at the Puxico Drug Store and at Owens-Illinois Glass Co in Alton, Illinois, before returning to Puxico where she met and married Leland Hendrix on November 2, 1946, and lived in Poplar Bluff, Missouri until moving to Alton, Illinois in 1951 and in 1990 moved to Wappapello, Missouri for retirement.
Dean was a great stay-at-home mom of 4 children, where she did all those stay-at-home mom things as well as sewing for her 3 daughters, gardening, canning and enjoying taking care of her roses as well as traveling. She also was very active in her church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, writing and putting on Christmas plays, being a youth sponsor, church secretary and with her husband, visiting those in the hospitals. She was always encouraging anyone that came across her path.
Preceded in death is her husband Leland Hendrix, her parents, a loving Stepfather Washington Hodge, her brothers, Benton, Basil, Bazel, Beauford, Richard, and a sister Vernola; a Step-sister Lula Potter and Granddaughter Angela (Hendrix) Winegar.
Surviving are one son Richard (Jenny) Hendrix of Apple Valley, Minnesota, 3 daughters Paula (Larry) Wooldridge of Maryville, Illinois, Connie Hendrix and Lula (Michael) Larson, both of Kansas City, Missouri, six grandchildren, Rachael (Craig) Butler, Matthew (Erin) Wooldridge, Christopher Hendrix, David (Sueann) Schwent II, Ryan McBee, and Mia (Don) Sutherland; 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and 2 sisters Vadola Martin of Puxico, Missouri and (Victoria) Ruth George of Alhambra, Illinois and many nieces and nephews.
The family is very grateful for the loving attention from family and friends during Mom's last days, in particular the gentle care of the staff at Westwood Hills Health and Rehab Center in Poplar Bluff, MO, and visits by her good shepherd and pastor Rev. Haynes and the Church family from Lakeland Assembly and Dr. Matthew Riffle of Poplar Bluff.
Visitation will be Friday, March 1, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Puxico, Missouri, with the Rev. Arvin Haynes of Wappapello, Missouri officiating. Interment will be in the Fagan Cemetery near Puxico, MO with Watkins and Sons Funeral Home of Puxico in charge of all arrangements.
