Ruby N. Hammond

Ruby N. Hammond, the daughter of the late Joseph and Molly Corbin Bess, was born in Idalia on Oct. 20, 1910, and died at the Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Center in Dexter on Monday, July 11, 2005, at the age of 94. Mrs. Hammond had lived in Bernie since 1965 and was a former resident of Dexter for 26 years. She was a member of the Beech Grove General Baptist Church near Bloomfield. On Oct. 26, 1930, she was married to Clarence C. "Bill" Hammond. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1978. Surviving are one son, Billy Hammond of Bernie; two daughters, Geraldine Sollars of Dexter and Margie Lee Brown of Waverly, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Rufus Bess; and one sister, Rue Walls. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter with Rev. Ivan Mekan of Bernie officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
