John W. Hofmann John W. Hofmann, the son of the late John William Sr. and Irene Curry Hofmann, was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 1, 1925, and passed away in Florence, Alabama on June 4, 2005, at the age of 80 years, 1 months and 3 days. Mr. Hofmann had been a resident of the Shoals since 1952, and was a former resident of Detroit, Michigan. He served with the First Marine Division during World War II in the South Pacific. He attended Delta State on a football scholarship, and briefly played professional football in Detroit. Delta State is where he met his beautiful wife, Rita. He loved her great big brown eyes. One of the hardest times in his life was to give Rita an ultimatum about not dating anyone else but him. They married 56 years ago. He was a local financial advisor for many years in Florence, Alabama. He was the president of the Civitan club when the CP Telethon started. Mr Hofmann was the MC for the telethon for over thirty years. He was a founding and charter member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was know as "Big John" and was a larger than man in many ways. He always told his children to work hard and keep their word. He also taught his family that kindness and fairness is very important. Family was every thing to him. He had such a presence and awesome personality. He was the most kind and most gentle man you could ever know. Surviving are two sons, Michael T. (Rhonda) Hofmann of Killen, Alabama, Timothy L. (Sandi) Hofmann of Decatur, Alabama; one daughter, Shaun H. Grove of Memphis, Tennessee; six grandchildren; Melisa S. (Wes) Winstead, Christopher A. Snyder, Jeffrey Michael Hofmann, John William Hofmann II, Megan Taylor Hofmann, David Ozment Hofmann; two great grandchildren, Alexandria and Dylan Winstead. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife on January 7, 2005 and one brother, Jim Hofmann. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 6, 2005, from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Elkins Funeral Home in Florence, Alabama. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home with Bro. Henry Melton of Faith Tabernacle officiating. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at 2:00 PM in the Parma Cemetery in Parma, Missouri. Interment will follow in the Parma Cemetery in Parma, Missouri with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Parma, Missouri in charge of arrangements.
